Recommended Coach and Best Selling Author – David Allen

gtdI have recently been in touch with David Allen the best selling author of Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. We swapped some emails because I thought he would be an ideal person for me to recommend as a coach and author and David was keen for me to include some information about him and his methods on my site.

As an enhanced article in this series of recommended coaches and authors, David kindly answered a few additional questions I wanted to put to him.

[MK] Hi David, what is keeping you busy at the moment and do you have anything new in the pipeline that is exciting you right now?

[DA] We’re honing a training design for global distribution through exclusive franchisees we’re establishing in major countries and regions. I’m focused a lot on getting the design right, for export; and for creating and supporting a network of global trainers, spreading the GTD message. I’m also involved in a deep research project with Intentional Software to explore a next-gen version of productivity software. I’m also still happy to be doing keynote presentations and workshops around the world, as it wakes up to the value of GTD for this century.

[MK] Even though it was 20 years ago I can remember the moment when I was a homeless teen that I decided to change my life, the experiences I went through then shaped my life for the better. Was there one event or an influence from a specific person that inspired you early in your career?

[DA] No, not one, but several experiences and people who, over several years, provided catalytic inspiration for what I’m doing. Connecting with Michael Bookbinder, a personal friend and fellow-explorer; John-Roger, my spiritual coach; Russell Bishop, my self-development coach; and Dean Acheson, my consulting coach, were all hallmark events that filled in many blanks for me about what I’m about.

[MK] What has been the highlight of your career and what has made you really happy in your working life?

[DA] Writing a best-selling book that congealed and expressed a set of best practices honed over twenty five years, and being able to hear about and appreciate the life-transforming value it has created for so many people, in all walks of life; and knowing that the book and our teachings will live way past me to continue to create positive influence in the world… that’s way cool.

[MK] Did you have any fear or apprehension to progress as an entrepreneur? If you did how did you overcome that?

[DA] Incessant angst from day one, thirty-two years ago, when I “hung out my shingle” to sell myself as a consultant… can I provide enough value simply by sharing my presence, awareness, and knowledge, to receive enough compensation to continue doing that??? That uncertainly still exist, though at a very different level. Overcoming the anxiety was simply a matter of trusting in the forces of the universe to continue to pay my rent, if I kept doing the best I could, with whatever was right in front of me, at the time; and keeping on with a vision of success for the future.

[MK] If you could give only one piece of advice to someone starting their own business or looking to make improvements to their existing venture, what would it be?

[DA] Trust your inner wisdom,  and that the universe will supply you with what you need, when you need it. It also helps a lot to clean up your act, and apply the GTD methods to clear up your psyche to be able to have time and space to access that wisdom.

[MK] Thank you David for taking the extra time to answer my questions and for sharing your thoughts and insights.
